The Merging of Skateboarding Style with Hip-Hop Culture

Over the years, skateboarding has had a huge impact of what we now see as a Hip-Hop streetwear style. Since 1960s, Hip-hop fashion started developing associations with skate, Japanese streetwear and punk. “There was this shift from a hive mind mentality of style toward a championing of individuality” This suggests, that as more younger rappers entered the industry, hip-hop culture shifted towards having a “unique voice” and a lot of fashion companies saw the opportunity to market their products through these emerging trends. Nowadays, hip-hop fashion has become very diverse and a lot of different styles can be associated with it.

Both Hip-Hop and Skateboarding are street movements that are closely related due to their rebellious, alternative nature. What started as form of individual expression and urban youth movement has now developed into a well-recognized style for those who want to make a unique fashion statement.
